How to Choose Your First Quality EDC Knife

New to EDC knives? This guide covers blade steels, lock types, legal considerations, and our starter recommendations.

Blade Steel Basics

Budget tier: 8Cr13MoV, D2. Mid: 154CM, S30V. Premium: S45VN, 20CV, MagnaCut. Higher tier = better edge retention + corrosion resistance, but harder to sharpen.

Lock Types

Liner Lock: most common, easy one-hand close. Frame Lock: stronger, titanium handle IS the lock. Back Lock: traditional, strong, two-hand close. Axis Lock: ambidextrous, easy, premium feel.

Size

Under 3" blade is legal almost everywhere in the US. 3-3.5" is the EDC sweet spot. Check your local laws — they vary wildly.

Our Starter Picks

$30-50: Civivi Elementum or Ontario RAT 2. $80-120: Benchmade Bugout or Hogue Deka. $150+: Spyderco Para 3 or ZT 0450.
