Understanding Flashlight Beam Patterns — Throw vs Flood

What do candela, lumens, and beam distance actually mean? A practical guide to choosing the right beam for you.

Lumens vs Candela

Lumens = total light output. Candela = intensity in one direction. A floody light has high lumens but low candela. A thrower has high candela relative to lumens.

Flood Lights

Wide, even beam. Great for: up-close tasks, walking paths, room illumination. Example: Emisar D4V2 (floody optic) — lights up everything within 20 meters evenly.

Throw Lights

Tight, focused beam. Great for: long distances, spotting, outdoor navigation. Example: Acebeam L18 — reaches 1000+ meters but has a narrow hotspot.

EDC Sweet Spot

Most EDC flashlights use a balanced beam — focused enough to reach 100-300m but with enough spill to illuminate surroundings. The Fenix PD36R and Olight Warrior Mini are good examples.

Rule of Thumb

Indoor/urban use → more flood. Outdoor/rural → more throw. Not sure? Pick a balanced EDC light and you'll be covered for 90% of scenarios.
